Howard Rideout designed Planet Bowl in 1995/96 while working at the offices of Patrick T. Y. Chan Architect. This is his second building completed in his career, and from this project he gained the ability to work from the initial consultation with the client, through to working drawings and then to contract administration. Howard named this project Planet Bowl, and gave the interiors and exterior a futuristic feel.
Working with Del Terrelonge of Terrelonge Design (now rhed-22, one of Canada’s most prominent graphic designers) on the graphics and signage was also a rewarding experience. In visiting the site this summer during the PanAm Games, he was able to review the design for a building he had not seen in years. Yes, 20 years of wear and tear were evident on this building, the materials showing their age, but the projects strengths were still evident. Howard recalls that Feng Shui played an important part in the design of this project; from the angle of the entry, with single columned canopy, to the figure 8 fountain with its water directed towards the building using the same angle. Each of these features were incorporated to ensure the greatest success for the business. With its transformation to host the PanAm Games this summer, Planet Bowl has yet another layer in its 20-year history.
